Boys and Girls Home of Alaska Hosting Open House

August 8, 2008 will be a special day for Boys and Girls Home as our newest subsidiary Boys and Girls Home of Alaska (BGHA) hosts an Open House at the recently completed 77,000 square foot facility located in Fairbanks, Alaska. The facility includes 4 cottages, each housing up to 30 children; a full service cafeteria; 8 classrooms; a gymnasium and several meeting and conference rooms.

“Nearly 800 children were placed in residential psychiatric treatment center facilities outside the state of Alaska in the last fiscal year alone costing the state roughly $40 million dollars,” stated Robert Sheehan, President and CEO of Boys and Girls Home and Family Services, Inc. “We recognized a dire need here in Alaska and saw the problems with having to send children out of state to seek treatment.” Staff at Boys and Girls Home are acutely aware that in order to provide the best care for an adolescent in need, family support is a necessity. “Geographic location, cultural background and proximity   to family can make a world of difference with treatment” stated Carla Smith, Clinical Director, BGHA.

BGHA is a residential psychiatric treatment center that will provide Level 5 care, the highest level of mental health service available, to children ages 6-18. Level 2-4 care will continue to be provided through our partnership agency, Family Centered Services of Alaska, allowing clients a smooth transition in a continuum of quality services.

North High Student Council Pack Suitcases for Boys and Girls Home and Family Services, Inc.

The Sioux City North High School Student Council continued their humanitarian efforts recently by purchasing and filling suitcases for the clients at Boys and Girls Home and Family Services, Inc. (BGHFS). The money for these items was raised during a charity North High School Faculty vs. Students basketball game held earlier this spring.

North’s Student Council first got involved with BGHFS last December when they purchased holiday gifts for the clients at BGHFS and were motivated to do more. They came up with the idea to fill suitcases with necessities such as towels, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, etc. so the clients would have those things as they leave the agency.

“The children and adolescents who come to Boys and Girls Home for help often feel alone and disconnected from their friends or families. This project makes them feel special and the fact that this help is coming from kids their own age makes it even more significant,” stated Terri Dooley, Executive Vice President of Development. “I believe it is a testament to the integrity of these young leaders who not only seek to help those in need, but act on that aspiration. We are so very grateful for their contributions.”

North High School Student Council sponsor Brenda Bush-Hanson added, “The members of the North High Student Council really enjoy participating in a project that directly benefits their fellow classmates.  It provided them with the opportunity to organize a community service project that works to improve the lives of North High students and other students in the area.  The Student Council members hope to continue this relationship with Boys and Girls Home to help other teenagers like themselves.”

The North High School Student Council consists of 40 members, 10 from each grade level. There is an executive council consisting of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Sergeant-At-Arms.  Prior to student council elections all candidates are interviewed. One half of the student council is selected based on those interviews while the other half is selected by popular vote.
